
























Ukraine’s parliament backed the imposition of martial law in some regions a day after the nation’s navy was fired on by Russia near the Crimean peninsula President Vladimir Putin annexed four years ago.
A total of 276 lawmakers in Kiev voted on Monday to approve the measure, which was billed as a means of defending the country from potential further aggression from Russia. Martial law will take effect in coastal regions and those bordering Russia on Nov. 28 and will last for 30 days.
Sunday’s naval incident in the Kerch Strait, where six Ukrainian sailors were injured and three ships seized, marked a dramatic escalation in tensions between the two former allies, denting both nations’ financial markets. European Union countries blamed the incident on Russia, with Ukraine urging the international community to apply further sanctions.
