“For decades, the FSB agents, the Russian lobby at the highest levels have slowed down the process of diversification. Moreover, the regime of Yanukovych practically buried that process by stopping it. Only after demonstration of political will over the past five years, thanks to cooperation with the Westinghouse company, Ukraine has become the first country in the world to diversify the supplies of nuclear fuel,” President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said at a meeting on the nuclear energy development in Khmelnytsky region, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, now 6 out of 13 NPP units in Ukraine have already started to use American fuel, making up for 46% of the entire nuclear power generation in the country.

The process of diversification is being implemented without quality or primecost losses, the President assured.

“We managed to get rid of the monopoly dependence from nuclear power generation which had used Russian nuclear fuel,” Poroshenko stressed.

At the same time, he added that the next strategic step in the issue of fuel supplies should be the provision of Ukrainian NPPs with nuclear fuel of domestic production, noting that the government has already been taking the relevant measures.
