Well-known Russian lawyer Ilya Novikov will join the defense team of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a number of criminal cases opened against him on the basis of statements filed by former Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Andriy Portnov, the press service of the European Solidarity party has reported.
"This decision was made when it emerged that the State Bureau of Investigation intends to seek legal assistance [...] from the aggressor country, in particular, in criminal proceedings regarding the passage of Ukrainian warships in the Kerch Strait in November 2018. As is known, these proceedings were instituted on the basis of a statement filed by Andriy Portnov, the former deputy head of the Yanukovych administration. In this situation, the involvement of a Russian lawyer is absolutely expedient. Ilya Novikov has permission to practice law in Ukraine," the report reads.
The party said that Novikov had been defending Ukrainian political prisoners in Russian courts. In particular, he served as a lawyer for Ukrainian sailors who were released last month.
The State Bureau of Investigation reported that Poroshenko appears in 12 criminal proceedings. Poroshenko has already been questioned as part of criminal proceedings regarding possible tax evasion during the sale and purchase of the Priamyi television channel.
